My Favorite Free Toddler Apps

By Innovative Mobile Apps

This app is great for tons of free flashcards.  The free version gives you flashcards for: actions, feelings, animals, foods, and baby things.  My favorite part of this app is the fact that there is also a free way to create your own flashcards (even in the free version)! You can take your own pictures of items that you want your child to learn about and then you can type a label below the picture and record your own voice! How cool is that?!? I am currently taking pictures of various toys my daughter loves next to a letter flashcard to help her learn her letters.  The options are endless for this customizable part of the app! Can you tell I am a little excited?  I’ve actually bought the full app and I highly recommend this app (at minimum the free version).  Try it, what have you got to lose?!

Interactive ABC HD - Pre-reading for Kids

By Kids Academy Company

This app is a fun way to learn about letters with minimal interaction.  All you have to do is tap the screen and the screen will become animated and show a word that begins with the letter along with an animal.  This app is also free and super fun!

Letter School Lite

By Boreaal

The Letter School only gives you letters A-E free, but this is a great way to test out the app and see if it’s right for you (I only have the lite version of this app right now because my daughter still finds it difficult).  This app is great to learn how to write letters.  Each letter has three activities.  First it shows you an item that starts with the letter and then the capital letter.  Next,  it puts dots on the capital letter and you trace the dots in the correct order and then the letter comes to life by either bubbling, having a train ride of the tracks you created, or in the final level you drawing once the dots disappear and then the letter appearing.

iTouchiLearn Words for Preschool Kids:Letters, Spelling and Reading

This app is another of my favorites! I’ve actually bought the full version of this one as well, but the free version is so fun and a great way to learn letters.  In the “Words” area of the app you can choose “Actions” or “Movies”.  The “Actions” area allows you to choose a word and then it says the word and shows the word and  the action associated with the word. The “Movies” section shows each word in motion without any interaction required.  Under “Games” you can choose from “Spell,” “Word,” and “Picture.”  Under “Spell” you can drag each letter to its shadow and spell words.  This level is simple and like a puzzle.  This is the level my 2 ½ year old is capable of completing.  The next level under “Games” is “Word.”  This level allows you to match a picture with the correct words.  “Picture” allows you to choose the correct picture from a written word (the name is said aloud).  And then for the finale a video of “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.”  I cannot express how much I like this app.  The full version is a steal at 1.99!

Plic, Ploc, Wiz

By Pepillo

This app are simple puzzles that show you the puzzle completed and then the geometric shapes fall off and you have to move your finger to place them each in the correct position.  This game was difficult for my daughter at first, but within a few attempts of trying the app she was able to do it independently.  This is a fun game that will improve your child’s geometry skills, fine motor skills, and problem solving skills.

ABC's and Me

By: 5 Pumpkins

This app is great because it gives you flashcards for numbers, letters, shapes, colors, transportation, foods, and about 3 other ways to work on letters recognition and sight words.  This one isn’t as interactive, but I love flashcards!
